TTO vs Laser Coding: Which Should You Choose?

Thermal transfer overprinting (TTO) and laser coding are two of the most popular technologies for variable data printing on packaging lines. Both produce high-quality, machine-readable codes, but they suit different materials, speeds and cost structures.

TTO uses a heated printhead to transfer ink from a ribbon onto film, labels or foil. It excels on flexible packaging (PE/PP films, laminates) running at high speed, and it is the default choice for snacks, frozen food and daily-chemical pouches. Consumables are ribbons, which are inexpensive and easy to swap.

Laser coding (CO2, fiber or UV) engraves a permanent mark with no consumables. CO2 works best on paper, carton, glass and some plastics; fiber is ideal for metals and cables; UV provides cold marking for films and pharma blisters without heat damage. The trade-off is a higher upfront investment.

How to choose: if you code flexible film at speed and want low running cost, start with TTO. If you need a permanent, consumable-free mark on cartons, glass, metal or medical film, choose laser. Many factories run both, TTO on pouch lines and laser on cartons.
